How do I Upload Proof of Renter's Insurance?

Purchased insurance outside of the TurboTenant platform? Upload a copy of your insurance policy after purchasing it.

Upload your renters insurance and get instant feedback if anything needs to be fixed.

If your landlord requires renters insurance, you can upload your policy directly in your TurboTenant renter portal.

Once you upload your document, it will be automatically reviewed so you know right away if everything looks good, or if something needs to be fixed.

How to upload your renters insurance

  1. Log in to your renter portal

  2. Go to the Insurance section

  3. Select Upload policy

  4. Upload your document (PDF, photo, or screenshot)

After you upload your file, we’ll begin reviewing it automatically.

We will check that your renter's insurance includes:

  • Landlord listed as an additional interest.

  • Coverage is for your entire lease term.

  • Insured address matches your rental address and unit number exactly.

What happens after you upload

While your document is being reviewed

After uploading, you may briefly see a message that your document is being reviewed. This usually only takes a few moments.

If your policy looks good

If your document meets the requirements, you’ll see a confirmation that your policy was successfully uploaded.

You may also see a summary of what was verified, such as:

  • Your policy is renters insurance (HO-4)

  • Your name matches the policy

  • The address and unit match your rental

  • The policy dates cover your lease

  • Your landlord is listed as Additional Interest (if required)

At that point, you’re all set unless your landlord follows up.

If there’s an issue with your upload

If something doesn’t match or is missing, you’ll see a message explaining what needs to be fixed.

You’ll only see the specific issue(s), such as:

  • Address or unit number doesn’t match your lease

  • Landlord is not listed as Additional Interest

  • Policy dates don’t cover your lease term

  • Document is not renters insurance

From there, you can:

  • Upload a corrected document, or

  • Get a renters insurance policy that meets the requirements

Can I still submit my policy if something is flagged?

In some cases, you may still be able to continue with your upload even if something doesn’t fully match.

However:

  • Your landlord will be notified there may be an issue

  • You may be asked to correct and re-upload your policy

To avoid delays, it’s best to fix any issues before submitting.

Tips to get approved the first time

Before uploading, double-check that:

  • Your policy is renters insurance (HO-4)

  • Your name matches the policy

  • The address and unit number match your lease exactly

  • Your landlord is listed as Additional Interest (if required)

  • The policy covers your full lease term

Uploading a declarations page or full policy document works best.

Q: What is “Additional Interest”?

A: This means your landlord is listed on your policy so they can be notified if your coverage is canceled or changes.

Q: What type of insurance do I need?

A: You’ll need a renters insurance policy (HO-4). Auto or homeowners insurance won’t meet the requirement.

Q: Why did my upload fail?

A: This usually happens when something doesn’t match your lease (like your address or landlord details) or the document isn’t renters insurance.

Q: How long does the review take?

A: The review happens automatically and usually takes just a few moments after you upload your document.

Q: Where do I upload my policy?

A: In your renter portal under the Insurance section of your Tenant Portal
